What's Big for Father's Day? Survey Says Gift Cards
Brentwood, Tenn. - Shopping for that special gift for Mother's Day is a breeze with many options mom would love: jewelry, flowers, candy and a whole host of other gift items available. But Father's day presents a bigger challenge for most people.
"Unless your dad is engaged in a particular hobby or sport, shopping for Father's Day can be baffling," said Bob Skiba, executive vice president and general manager of Comdata's retail division. "There are far fewer generic gifts - such as flowers - for men than for women. A lot of people find Father's Day shopping a chore."
"That's why gift cards are a great alternative. They let Dad pick his own gift when he's ready."
Based on a recent national survey, Comdata expects Father's Day to represent another great time of year for gift card sales.
The survey reported:
- Gift card purchases for fathers are on the rise, with 21 percent more consumers purchasing gift cards for their dads in 2007 than 2006.
- Packaging is also important, with gift givers stating that while they usually send gift cards in a gift card envelope, unique packaging (like placing a gift card in a toolbox) is unexpected and well-received.
- One-quarter of purchasers bought one or more gift cards online. Of those, approximately one-third indicated that this was the first time they had purchased a gift card through the internet.
- One-third of respondents are interested in a gift card that allows them to record a personal message.
- Four out of five consumers participating in the survey say that they would prefer to receive a gift card from a favorite store rather than a gift chosen for them by the giver.
- Purchasers loaded a higher average dollar amount on the cards they gave, with per capita spending increasing 15 percent.
- 53 percent of respondents say they often spend more than the original amount on the gift card, adding an average of 17 percent.
